Spencer Glacier

Blackstone Glacier is a tide water glacier at the end of Blackstone Bay.  I think it's going to be a while before this snow melts.

We decided to turn around because of fuel.  Here you can see the gently rolling slopes of this massive glacier.

This is the top of Spencer glacier on our return trip.

At the end of the glacier is the crevasse field.  It's the most difficult part of this trip and requires some skillful riding.

Brad stopped in this snow filled crevasse for a photo.  Once in a while we would hit a patch of blue ice with no snow on top which offered no traction at all.

Lots of other people were enjoying this incredible day as well.  Brad and I hope to return another day and perhaps spend the night.

The End

Note: Glaciers are potentially very dangerous. The following weekend there were three separate incidents on this ice field involving snowmachiners and crevasses.  One man was killed and several others were rescued by helicopter after falling into crevasses up to 70 ft deep.  If you decide to travel on a glacier understand these risks and the factors that increase your chance of an accident such as temperature, snowfall, the strength of the snow-bridges, and where the crevasses are located.  Never travel faster than your vision and avoid ledges that could fail from your weight.
