We took a group photo the next morning at our campsite just north of Yentna Station. Denali is in the backdrop but is over exposed in this photo. We estimated it dropped to near 0° F at night. Good thing we had warm sleeping bags. \ Ken and Chuck headed back home and I continued on. This is the Skwentna checkpoint a mile or so from the mouth of the Skwentna River.
I continued on past Skwentna for another 20 miles until I reached a sign that said Finger Lake 25 miles. The trail left the river and had become narrow and slow with few passing lanes. It became obvious to me I would never make Rainy Pass at this rate so I might as well relax and enjoy this beautiful scenery. I pitched my tent at the north end of Onestone Lake.
After putting up my tent I decided to go cross country skiing. I photographed several mushers as they passed me on the trail. Skiing in the sun on perfect snow conditions and photographing the mushers made for a very enjoyable day. Here you can see how narrow the trail had become in the forest. Passing dogs with a snowmachine would be difficult and dangerous. This was another reason I switched to skiis.
